Safe exam browser haiku1/10/2023 ![]() A writing strategy is a series of actions that writers use to achieve their goals and may support one or more components of the writing process. Pupils are taught each of these components and underlying strategies. The scope and depth of the literature inspires high standards for all through a mastery approach to learning and love of language in all its forms.Īt Powers Hall Academy, writing is made up of five stages: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. High-quality literary texts are available to all learners. Children working at greater depth are encouraged to exercise conscious control over levels of formality including the manipulation of grammar and vocabulary in order to dem onstrate the appropriate register. Children are given opportunities to write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences selecting language, appropriate grammatical structures and cohesive devices that show a good awareness of the reader. ![]() Children then apply their learning through the process of planning, drafting, sharing, evaluating, revising, editing and publishing. Key grammatical structures are identified and relevant skills are taught through shared and modelled writing. ’Ĭhildren follow a structured approach to the writing process which begins with the deconstruction of a model text. We plan a writing sequence backwards, beginning with the end of unit outcome and focusing on the skills that need to be developed in order for children to meet the required expectation this is known to teaching staff as ‘bottom-up planning. In writing, well-planned learning intentions based on formative assessment are mapped out over a complete sequence, enabling learners to move through the gears from novice to expert. We plan a unit of work for writing over a period of three weeks, ensuring that we have a balance of skills and application being taught throughout. We aim for learners to have a secure understanding of the purpose of a text type, the purpose and intended impact of writing skills/tools and the ability to carefully select vocabulary with careful attention to the desired effect on the readers’ thoughts and feelings. Our planning will ensure that children are immersed in a range of genres (to showcase GPS skills) and have a clear understanding of purpose. We want to create confident, independent writers who develop stamina for writing throughout school. This is all underpinned with a strong focus on oracy, where we use the mantra “Good writers always say it first”. Our aim is that English learning is contextualised in children’s experiences and therefore is carefully planned with explicit links to children’s wider learning – all whilst mastering fundamental writing skills and techniques with a clear purpose and context. Children are encouraged to question author choices and explore the context in which a text is written, making links with the world around them. We believe that all of our children are authors and that the link between reading and writing are heavily entwined. Our curriculum provides powerful writing opportunities with which our children can see themselves have a real-world impact. Writing is a tool with which we can change the world.
